In addressing HIV, we utilize Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), a treatment that, while not a cure, helps people living with HIV maintain good health and an extended lifespan.

ART typically involves a combination of three different drugs, sometimes conveniently packaged in a single pill. Like any medication, ART does come with potential risks and side effects. Consistent adherence to the prescribed medication is crucial for keeping the viral load at a minimum. Our goal is to achieve an undetectable viral load, usually fewer than 50 copies/mL of blood.

Engaging in open conversations with your partners about sex, HIV, and STI testing before engaging in sexual activity is crucial. Regular testing and knowing your status are fundamental aspects of HIV and STI prevention, ensuring the safety of both you and your partners.

For those at high risk of HIV, consider PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), a daily medication proven to be over 96% effective when taken as prescribed. If you suspect recent exposure to HIV within the last 72 hours, inquire about PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis), a preventive treatment that must be initiated within 72 hours of exposure to be effective.

Other preventive measures include consistently using condoms and lube during anal or vaginal intercourse, limiting your sexual partners, avoiding alcohol and drugs that may impair judgment, and refraining from sharing needles or drug-injection equipment. Learn effective methods for cleaning syringes if you inject drugs. At Open Door, we're here to guide you in making informed choices for your health and well-being.
