Each year on June 27, Open Door is proud to recognize National HIV Testing Day by raising awareness of the critical role that testing plays in fighting the HIV epidemic and offering FREE HIV testing for the entire week surrounding the nationally recognized day. Over 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV, and 1 in 7 people with HIV don’t know they have it. Getting tested is the only way for you to know your HIV status, and the CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once. Stop into either Center this week between 8:30am-4:30pm (closed noon – 1pm) to receive a FREE HIV test and information on health.

A message from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Decline signals HIV prevention and treatment efforts in the U.S. are paying off, but not all communities are seeing the same progress.  The number of annual HIV infections in the United States fell 18 percent between 2008 and 2014 – from an estimated 45,700 to 37,600 – according to new estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) presented today at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Seattle. Progress, however, was not the same among all populations or areas of the country. “The nation’s new high-impact approach to HIV prevention is working. We have the tools, and we are using them to bring us closer to a future free of HIV,” said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention. “These data reflect the success of collective prevention Read more >

Open Door Advocacy Alert January 26, 2017 ACT NOW TO PROTECT THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT. It’s difficult to decipher what is fact from fiction in the news right now. We at Open Door will do our best to help keep you informed with the facts. Currently Congress has taken the the first step in the process to repeal the Affordable Care Act. This could take healthcare coverage away from 30 million people by introducing a budget resolution. We do not know when or how health coverage will change, but we do know that we have to do everything in our power to encourage our government to make good choices to ensure that healthcare premiums do not increase, pre-existing conditions including HIV/AIDS continue to be covered and that there continues to be comprehensive coverage for people living with HIV/AIDS including prescription drug services, inpatient hospital care, lab testing and mental health Read more >

Governor Rauner must sign SB 2038 for human services funding With the end of the regular legislative session on May 31, it has become even more difficult for any new appropriations bills to pass the General Assembly. SB 2038 currently awaits action by Governor Bruce Rauner and could be the only chance the human service sector has to see even partial funding for FY 16. We must make sure that he signs SB 2038. For over eleven months, the human service sector has been without any state funding to keep providing essential services to Illinoisans most in need. HIV services, supportive housing and mental health treatment are just a few of the many programs that have been held in the lurch while Springfield has failed to act. While SB 2038 is not a solution to the overall problem in Springfield, it may be the only FY16 funding social service providers Read more >

June 3, 2016 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Open Door Health Center has received a grant from the Chicago Department of Public Health and HUD to provide housing opportunities for people living with HIV/AIDS in DuPage County. Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS Program (HOPWA) will allow Open Door to provide subsidies for clients to maintain a stable living environment, which is an essential element to accessing healthcare and HIV related services. “The prevalence of HIV/AIDS is up to 9 times higher among persons who are homeless or unstably housed,” states Perry Maier, Open Door Interim Executive Director. “The need for stable and affordable housing becomes more urgent after becoming infected.” The Housing and Health Study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) found housing status is one of the strongest predictors of access to treatment and positive health outcomes for people living with Read more >

Legislative Update – 4/12/16 Provided by our friends at AIDS Foundation of Chicago  Substantive Legislation Three of AFC’s legislative priorities were voted out of committee last week in the House: Representative Greg Harris’ bill, HB 6073, the Vital Records Modernization Act, which allows transgender Illinoisans to update their birth certificate to reflect their lived gender identity prior to undergoing surgery, passed out of House Human Services Committee on a vote of 8-6-0, with Yes votes coming from Democrats and all No votes from Republicans.  The bill now moves to the House floor. Representative Carol Ammons’ bill, HB 6213, also passed out of House Human Services committee on a unanimous vote with the promise that we would continue to work with Medicaid providers and the Illinois Department of Health & Family Services (HFS) to reach a compromise agreement.  This legislation aims to improve health literacy of Medicaid managed care enrollees and Read more >
